Cover for side, rear and front lift garbage compactors on collection runs.
Kerbside collection puts a heavy truck in residential streets alongside parked cars, pedestrians, children and low branches, then adds a hydraulic arm that swings out over the kerb. On top of that sits a problem the industry did not have ten years ago: lithium batteries in household bins starting fires in the hopper. Both exposures shape how these trucks are underwritten.
Waste collection trucks combine a heavy chassis with a compactor body in side lift, rear lift or front lift configuration. Superior Pak, MacDonald Johnston and Bucher are among the body builders used in Australia. Operators run council kerbside contracts, commercial bin services, skip and hooklift work and transfer station cartage, usually on fixed daily routes.

Damage from a fire started in the hopper by material placed in a bin, subject to the terms set out in the wording.
Injury or property damage in residential streets, including contact with parked vehicles and pedestrians.
A lithium battery is compacted with the load and ignites in the hopper partway through a run. The driver ejects the burning load onto the road, and damage typically spans the body, the road surface and anything parked nearby.
A side lift arm swings out to a bin and clips a car parked too close to it. These are individually small liability claims, but the frequency of them across a kerbside contract is what tends to drive renewal terms.
A front lift unit working a commercial strip contacts a low branch or a shop awning in a narrow street. The body damage is repairable, but the third party's structure and the trading disruption are usually the larger part of it.
Fire damage is commonly contemplated in these wordings, but this exposure has tightened significantly across the sector and conditions are appearing more often. Some insurers now ask about suppression, detection or driver ejection procedures as part of the terms. It is one to have confirmed in writing rather than assumed.
It is usually scheduled as its own item with its own value, and that is generally the right approach. A side or rear lift body with the lift gear can be worth as much as or more than the chassis under it, so a single chassis-derived figure will typically understate the unit. Ask for both figures on the schedule.
Council and principal contracts commonly specify a public liability limit, with ten million or twenty million dollars being figures that appear regularly in Australian waste and civil contracts. The contract itself is the authority, and requirements differ between councils. It is worth having the certificate checked against the clause before renewal.
The lift configuration, whether you run council kerbside, commercial or industrial collection, the body value relative to the chassis, the time spent in residential streets and any fire detection fitted all feed in. Claims frequency on lift arm and kerbside incidents matters as much as any single large loss. It has to be quoted on your actual routes and fleet.
