Cover for UD Croner, Quon and earlier UD models in Australian fleets.
UD sits in the middle of the Australian market, and most UD conversations come down to two things: what the truck does all day, and what body is on the back of it. The chassis is only part of the value once a tipper body, a crane, a fridge unit or a curtain-sided body has been fitted, and insurers price the combination rather than the badge.
UD Trucks is a Japanese manufacturer with a long history in Australia, previously sold here as Nissan Diesel. The current Australian range centres on the Croner in medium duty and the Quon in heavy duty, used for distribution, tipper and dog work, waste collection, agitator work and regional line haul. Earlier Condor and PK models remain in service in many fleets.
Damage to the truck and to the body, tipper, crane or tank fitted to it, where the fit-out has been declared.
Lost income while the truck is being repaired, generally with a waiting period and a daily limit.
Third-party injury or property damage connected with operating the truck on road or on site.
A body is left raised after tipping on a delivery site and contacts a power line or an awning as the truck moves off. Damage to the hoist, body and the third-party asset is the usual shape of it, and it is a claim insurers see on tipper work constantly.
A Croner on a metro distribution run takes a rear-end knock at a set of lights. The chassis damage is minor, but the fitted body and tail lifter often carry the longer repair and the parts delay that goes with it.
An older unit develops an electrical fault in the body wiring and the cab is destroyed by fire while parked. The difficult part of a claim like this is valuing a model that is no longer sold new, which is why the settlement basis matters.
Sometimes, though it is not a rule. Replacement value and parts pricing generally sit lower than a premium European unit, but the work the truck does, the body fitted to it and the driver profile usually move the premium more than the make. Two identical UDs on different work can rate very differently.
It generally can, provided the body has been declared and given its own value. On tipper, crane and tank work the fit-out is frequently worth more than the chassis, so a value taken from a bare chassis price will typically fall short. Ask for it to be itemised on the schedule.
Tell your broker before the new work starts. Rating is built around the use declared, so moving from general distribution into tipper and dog, waste or agitator work commonly changes both the premium and the appetite. A change made quietly is the kind of thing that complicates a claim later.
It depends on the insurer, the age of the unit and what evidence you can produce. A recent valuation, service history and photographs generally help the case, particularly for older Nissan Diesel and Condor models that are hard to price from market data. It is worth asking rather than defaulting to market value.
