Cover for tipper and dump trucks working construction, civil and quarry sites.
Tipper trucks carry sand, gravel, soil and demolition waste between job sites and public roads, which puts them on rough ground and in traffic on the same day. A rigid tipper can represent a six-figure asset and a tri-axle unit considerably more, so how the vehicle, the tray and the load are insured is worth working through deliberately.
A tipper is a commercial vehicle with a hydraulic tipping body that unloads by raising the tray. Configurations run from small rigid tippers used in landscaping and local delivery through to semi-tipper and truck-and-dog combinations used in quarrying and civil work. Rear tippers, side tippers and belly dumpers each carry a different risk profile, and insurers assess them individually.
Damage to the prime mover, rigid unit, tipping body and hydraulics, including rollover on uneven ground.
Loss of income while the truck is off the road being repaired, generally with a waiting period and daily limit.
Third-party damage arising while loading, tipping or manoeuvring on site, which is where many tipper claims start.
A driver empties a load at a quarry stockpile and pulls forward before the body is fully down, catching an overhead powerline or a shed awning. The hoist, body and rams usually need major repair, and the network operator or property owner typically pursues its own repair costs on top.
A tri-axle tips wet fill on a newly formed pad, one side of the tray sinks into soft ground and the unit rolls onto its side. Recovery, body straightening and the cost of hiring a replacement truck while the unit is off the road usually make up most of the claim.
A load of road base is discharged over a residential driveway, a stormwater pit lid or a newly poured kerb and crushes it. That generally becomes a third-party property damage claim rather than a claim on the vehicle itself.
The motor section generally responds to the vehicle and the tipping body rather than the sand, gravel or spoil being carted. Cover for the material itself is usually arranged under a carriers liability or goods in transit section, and whether it responds depends on the policy terms and PDS. It is worth going through what you actually cart before limits are settled.
Typically the rigid tipper and the dog trailer are scheduled as separate items, each with its own value basis. That distinction matters at claim time, because a trailer damaged while detached in a yard can be treated differently to one damaged while being towed. Confirm both units appear on the schedule at current values.
It depends, and no honest figure can be quoted without the details. The main drivers are the configuration, the insured value, whether the work is quarry, civil, mining or urban, the proportion of unsealed road, driver age and heavy vehicle experience, the excess you choose and your claims history. A broker can price the same risk with several insurers so you can see how those factors move the number.
It is not a legal requirement in itself, but most principal contractors and councils will not put a tipper on site without evidence of motor and public liability cover at limits they specify. Those limits are set by the contract, not by the insurer, so it is worth reading the subcontract before the policy is placed. Compulsory third party and heavy vehicle registration obligations are separate again.
