Rigid Truck Insurance

Cover for light, medium and heavy rigid trucks across delivery and trade work.

Rigid trucks do most of Australia's short-haul work, from a 4.5 tonne cab-chassis a car licence holder can drive through to three-axle heavy rigids on regional runs. The risk is shaped less by the truck than by the body bolted to it and the streets it works in, because reversing, kerbside and loading-dock incidents dominate the claim numbers.

What is it?

A rigid truck carries its load on a single chassis rather than towing a semi-trailer. Bodies include trays, tippers, pantechs, curtain-siders, fridge bodies, tankers and service units. Australian fleets commonly run Isuzu, Hino, Fuso, UD, Iveco, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo rigids, licensed as light, medium or heavy rigid depending on gross vehicle mass and axle count.

What does rigid truck insurance cover?

Truck and fitted body

Damage to the cab-chassis and to the body or equipment fitted to it, where the fit-out has been declared.

Downtime

Lost income while the truck is off the road being repaired, generally with a waiting period and a daily limit.

Liability while working

Third-party injury or property damage arising out of use, including while reversing, loading or unloading.

What affects the cost?

  • GVM and licence class - light, medium or heavy rigid
  • Body type fitted to the chassis
  • Radius of operation and typical routes
  • Number of drops and time spent in urban traffic
  • Driver age, experience and claims history

Worth raising on the call

  • Reversing damage in tight yards and loading docks is the most common rigid truck claim.
  • The body and any crane or loader should be listed rather than assumed to sit inside the chassis value.
  • Trucks under 4.5 tonne GVM can be driven on a car licence, which changes who your drivers may be.

Claims we are commonly asked about

High light load rolls at a roundabout

A curtain-sider rigid carrying tall but light freight leans and goes over on a roundabout at what felt like a safe speed. Rollovers of this kind commonly involve towing, road closure, damage to the body and gates, and loss of the freight inside.

Forklift damages the body at a dock

A customer's forklift puts a tyne through the side of the body while unloading at their warehouse. Damage caused by a third party during loading generally raises which policy responds first and whether recovery from the other business is realistic.

Parked truck hit by an unknown driver

The truck is struck kerbside during a delivery and the other driver is gone before anyone sees the plate. Without an identified party, the claim is usually made on your own policy, and whether you pay a full excess can depend on the wording.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether damage caused by a third party's forklift during loading is treated as motor damage, and which section is expected to respond.
  • Worth confirming whether there is a no-blame or unidentified motorist provision that reduces or waives the excess when a parked truck is damaged and the other driver cannot be traced.
  • Worth confirming that the body, crane, tail lift or refrigeration unit fitted to the chassis has been separately valued on the schedule rather than assumed inside the cab-chassis price.

Common questions

What is the difference between rigid truck and prime mover insurance?

A rigid carries its load on one chassis, so the truck and its fitted body are usually insured as a single unit with the body declared. A prime mover is generally insured with each trailer listed as its own item, and non-owned trailers handled separately. The sections available are similar but how the assets are scheduled differs.

Do I still pay the excess if the other driver was at fault?

Many policies reduce or waive the excess where the at-fault party can be identified and their details supplied, but that varies by wording. If the other driver cannot be identified, the excess commonly still applies. Getting the plate, name and insurer details at the scene is the practical step.

Is downtime cover worth carrying on a rigid?

It tends to matter most where there is no spare truck and the income stops when the vehicle does, which describes most single-truck and small-fleet operators. The value depends on the daily limit, the waiting period and how long realistic repairs take. It is worth pricing with and without so the trade-off is visible.

What does rigid truck insurance cost?

It depends on the truck and the run. GVM and licence class, the body fitted, radius of operation and typical routes, the number of drops and time in urban traffic, and driver age, experience and claims history all drive the number. A broker can test the same profile across several insurers.
