Fuso Truck Insurance

Cover for Fuso light and medium rigids working delivery, trade and tipper jobs.

Fuso is a light and medium-duty specialist in Australia, so most Fuso quotes are about city work - deliveries, trades, tippers, tilt trays and fridge bodies moving through traffic all day. Frequency of small claims tends to matter more than one catastrophic loss, and the body fitted behind the cab is often worth as much as the chassis under it.

What is it?

Fuso is Daimler Truck's Japanese light and medium-duty brand. The Canter covers the 4.5 tonne car-licence class through to heavier light-duty models, the Fighter handles medium-duty distribution work, and the Shogun sits in the heavy range. The Rosa is the brand's small bus. Canters in particular are bodied locally as tippers, tilt trays, pantechs and fridge vans.

What does fuso truck insurance cover?

Cab, chassis and body

Damage to the vehicle and to the tipper, tray, box, crane or refrigerated body fitted to it.

Urban contact damage

Kerb, carpark, awning and reversing damage, which drives most of the claim frequency on light rigids.

Downtime and lost income

Cover for income lost while the vehicle is being repaired, usually with a waiting period and a daily limit.

What affects the cost?

  • Model and GVM - Canter, Fighter or Shogun
  • Body type fitted and its declared value
  • Metropolitan delivery versus regional work
  • Number of drivers and whether a car licence applies
  • Overnight parking arrangements

Worth raising on the call

  • The body fitted after purchase is the most common omission on a light truck schedule.
  • Car-licence 4.5 tonne models widen your driver pool, which underwriters will ask about.
  • If the truck carries goods for hire and reward, that use needs to be declared up front.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Tipper body raised under an awning

A Canter tipper is hoisted at a suburban drop without checking overhead and the body strikes a carport beam, damaging both. Damage to the body and damage to the customer's structure usually sit under different sections, so the property owner's claim is handled separately from the truck repair.

Customer vehicle damaged on a tilt tray

A winch cable or tie-down lets go while loading and the customer's car rolls back into the tray, damaging its rear and the deck. A vehicle in your care on the tray is generally treated as goods in your custody rather than as motor damage, which is a different section again.

Truck stolen from a residential street

A driver takes the Canter home and it is gone overnight from the kerb, later recovered with the body damaged and the tools missing. Where the vehicle is kept overnight is generally a declared detail, so a difference between the declared and actual garaging address can complicate the claim.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether damage to a customer's vehicle while it is on your tilt tray is treated as goods in your care rather than motor damage, and which section responds to it.
  • Worth confirming that the fitted body - tipper, tilt tray, pantech or fridge - is scheduled at its own declared value rather than assumed to be inside the cab-chassis figure.
  • Worth confirming who is permitted to drive, including casual and car-licence drivers under 25 on a 4.5 tonne Canter, and whether an additional excess applies to them.

Common questions

Can anyone with a car licence drive my Fuso Canter, and does the insurer care?

The 4.5 tonne models can generally be driven on a car licence under state licensing rules, but insurers still rate the driver. Age, experience and heavy-vehicle familiarity usually influence both the premium and the excess that applies. It is better to declare a broad driver pool than to discover a restriction at claim time.

Is the tipper or tilt tray body covered by the truck policy?

Usually only if it has been declared. Bodies are commonly fitted locally after purchase, so the value quoted by the dealer for the cab-chassis often does not include them. Listing the body and its value on the schedule is the practical way to avoid a shortfall, subject to the policy terms.

Do I need carriers liability if I only deliver my own goods?

Carriers liability responds to goods you carry for other people, so it may not be the right fit if everything on the truck is yours. Your own stock is more commonly addressed under a property or goods in transit section of a business pack. The right answer depends on who owns the goods on board.

What does Fuso truck insurance cost?

It depends on the model and how it works. GVM, the body fitted and its value, metropolitan versus regional operation, the number and age of drivers, overnight parking and claims history all move the number, and a Canter doing multi-drop city work rates differently to a Shogun on regional runs. A broker can compare that profile across insurers.
