Cover for flat tray rigids used by trades, steel merchants and rural operators.
A flat tray truck is the general-purpose workhorse of Australian trades and rural business. It carries steel, timber, pallets, bins and small machinery, often with a crane behind the cab, and the openness that makes it useful also means load restraint failure is a live exposure every trip. Cranes and tipping gear add value that is easy to leave undeclared.
A flatbed or tray truck is a rigid vehicle with an open deck, with or without drop sides, built on chassis such as Isuzu, Hino, Fuso, UD and Iveco from car-licence 4.5 tonne units up to heavy rigids. Many carry a vehicle-loading crane, gates, headboard, toolboxes or a tipping tray, and each of those changes both the use and the insured value.
Damage to the vehicle and to fitted equipment such as the tray, gates, headboard or vehicle-loading crane.
Damage caused when freight shifts or falls from an open deck, which usually raises liability questions as well as motor ones.
Freight belonging to customers is generally handled by carriers or goods-in-transit cover rather than the motor section.
A bundle of RHS shifts on a roundabout, breaks the strap and slides onto the road in front of following traffic. Damage to the other vehicle is generally a liability question, damage to the customer's steel is a goods question, and the restraint method is usually the first thing examined.
The vehicle-loading crane touches a low service line while unloading pallets at a rural property, damaging the boom and the line. Incidents while the crane is operating rather than while the truck is driving often raise which policy section responds, so how the crane is scheduled matters.
The truck is parked on a residential street after a late job and the underbody toolboxes, chains and binders are cut open before morning. Tools and restraint gear generally sit under their own section with its own limit and security conditions rather than under motor damage.
It depends on what was damaged and which section applies. Damage to other people's vehicles or property is generally a liability matter, damage to a customer's freight is typically a carriers or goods-in-transit matter, and both usually turn on whether the load was restrained to the Load Restraint Guide standard. Documenting your restraint practice before a claim helps considerably.
Lifting for a fee is a different activity to lifting your own materials, and insurers generally want that declared. The crane itself usually needs to be scheduled with its own value, and lifting operations often need their own liability wording. Worth raising specifically at quote rather than assuming the motor policy carries it.
Carriers liability is aimed at goods you carry for others, so it may not be the right cover if everything on the deck is yours. Your own materials are more commonly addressed under a property in transit or business property section. Which one you need depends on who owns what is on the truck, subject to the policy terms.
It varies too much to quote a figure honestly. GVM, the value of the tray and any crane fitted, whether you carry for hire and reward or just your own gear, the sites you access, driver experience and your claims record all move the price. A broker can test the same profile across several insurers rather than one appetite.
