DAF Truck Insurance

Cover for DAF rigids and prime movers across distribution and linehaul work.

DAF is the European half of PACCAR's Australian offering, sold and serviced through the same dealer network as Kenworth. The trucks turn up across distribution, vocational and linehaul work, so a DAF quote can be about a light rigid on suburban delivery or a prime mover doing serious interstate kilometres. Repair pathways matter here as much as the badge does.

What is it?

DAF's Australian range spans the LF in light and medium-duty rigid roles, the CF in distribution and vocational work, and the XF as a heavy prime mover for linehaul and B-double operation. They are built in Europe and supported locally through the PACCAR dealer network. Bodies vary widely, from tautliner and pantech rigids through to tipper and agitator builds.

What does daf truck insurance cover?

Vehicle and fitted body

Damage to the cab and chassis plus any body, crane or equipment fitted after delivery, which should be declared at its own value.

Downtime while off road

Lost income while the truck is off the road, which is worth sizing against parts availability for imported models.

Liability and freight

Third-party damage arising from the vehicle, with customer freight generally addressed by separate carriers cover.

What affects the cost?

  • Model and GVM - LF rigid through to XF prime mover
  • Application - distribution, tipper, vocational or linehaul
  • Agreed value and age of the unit
  • Interstate versus metropolitan operation
  • Driver experience and fleet claims history

Worth raising on the call

  • Bodies, cranes and refrigeration units fitted after purchase are not automatically part of the vehicle value.
  • Repair times on imported models can influence how much downtime cover is worth carrying.
  • If the truck is under finance, the financier's interest usually needs to be noted on the policy.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Airkit destroyed on a low bridge

An XF prime mover with a high trailer clips a bridge and the roof fairings and airkit are torn off. Imported panels can stretch the repair well beyond what a local build would take, which is where downtime cover earns its place.

Fitted crane never added to the schedule

A CF rigid has a crane fitted after purchase and is later written off, but the settlement reflects only the truck value declared at inception. The crane was never added to the schedule, so it is not part of what was insured.

Rear body damaged at a dock

An LF rigid on suburban distribution reverses into a dock bumper and damages the rear body frame and door gear. The body is generally a separate item to the cab and chassis on the schedule, so how it was declared decides the outcome.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether bodies, cranes, tail lifts and refrigeration units fitted after purchase are listed at their own values rather than assumed to be included in the truck.
  • Worth confirming how long downtime cover runs and whether the period reflects realistic parts lead times for an imported model.
  • Worth confirming whether repairs are expected to go through a PACCAR dealer or whether the insurer can direct the vehicle to another repairer.

Common questions

Is a DAF more expensive to insure than a Japanese rigid?

Not by badge alone. Premium is driven far more by the agreed value, the application, the GVM and the driver profile than by the manufacturer. Where an imported model can differ is in repair pathway and parts lead time, which tends to show up in how much downtime cover is worth carrying rather than in the base rate.

Does my policy cover the trailer behind the prime mover?

Generally only if the trailer is listed as its own item. Prime movers and trailers are usually scheduled separately, and a trailer detached from the towing vehicle can be treated differently again. Operators running multiple trailers commonly schedule each one, including any borrowed or hired units.

Should I insure for agreed value or market value?

Agreed value fixes the sum insured at the outset so there is no argument about the figure at claim time, while market value is assessed at the date of loss and can be lower than expected on a specialised or heavily specced unit. Agreed value usually costs more. Financiers frequently have their own preference.

What does DAF truck insurance cost?

It depends on the unit rather than a set price. The main drivers are the model and GVM, from LF rigid up to XF prime mover, the application, the agreed value and age, whether the truck runs interstate or metropolitan, and driver experience and fleet claims history.
