Crane Truck Insurance

Cover for truck-mounted cranes and Hiab units lifting on site.

A crane truck is two exposures bolted together: a commercial vehicle and a lifting appliance. The lift is usually the bigger risk, because a dropped load can damage property far more valuable than the truck.

What is it?

Crane trucks carry a hydraulic knuckle-boom or straight-boom crane mounted behind the cab, commonly Hiab, Palfinger, Fassi or PM units. They are used across construction, steel, landscaping supply and general freight to self-load and place materials without a separate crane on site.

What does crane truck insurance cover?

Truck and crane

Damage to the vehicle and to the mounted crane, which is normally scheduled by value.

Goods being lifted

Property in your care while being lifted or placed, which standard liability commonly excludes.

Liability on site

Third-party injury or property damage arising during a lift, including strikes on structures and services.

What affects the cost?

  • Crane capacity and reach
  • What is typically lifted and its value
  • Site types - residential, commercial or industrial
  • Operator ticketing and experience
  • Whether lifts are made over public areas

Worth raising on the call

  • Damage to the goods being lifted is a specific extension, not part of ordinary liability.
  • Lifting over roads or public footpaths often carries conditions.
  • Crane inspection and maintenance records are usually relevant at claim time.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Load through a roof

A pack of trusses or a pallet of tiles swings or a sling lets go while being placed on a house, and the load goes through the roof frame. The damage to the customer's building and the damage to the materials themselves are commonly dealt with under different sections.

Stabiliser sinks on a verge

An operator lifts at reach with an outrigger pad on a soft nature strip, the leg punches in and the truck lists into a parked car or a fence. The truck, the crane and the third-party property are all in play, and ground assessment usually becomes the central question.

Boom into an overhead service

The knuckle boom contacts a low service line while slewing on a suburban street, tripping the supply to nearby properties. Alongside the machine damage there is generally a network operator claim and a safety regulator notification.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether damage to the goods being lifted is covered both while they are slung and while they are sitting on the deck in transit, since those can be different sections.
  • Worth confirming whether cover is conditional on outriggers being deployed to the manufacturer's instructions and on a ticketed operator being at the controls.
  • Worth confirming how the wording treats a lift that exceeds the rated capacity chart or is made without a lift plan.

Common questions

Is the crane insured separately from the truck?

The crane is usually scheduled as an item in its own right with its own value, even though it is mounted on the vehicle. That matters when a crane is transferred to a new truck or when a boom is replaced, because the schedule needs to keep up. Confirm the crane's current value is reflected rather than the value it had when first fitted.

Does public liability cover damage to the goods I lift?

Generally not on its own. Standard public liability wordings commonly exclude property in your care, custody or control, and the load under the hook is exactly that. Cover for goods being lifted is normally arranged as a specific extension with its own limit, subject to the policy terms.

Does the operator need a licence?

Vehicle loading cranes above a certain rated capacity generally require a high risk work licence in Australia, and the threshold and class are set by the work health and safety regulator in your state rather than by the insurer. Insurers commonly expect ticketing and maintenance records to be current. Confirm the current requirement with your state regulator.

What drives the cost of crane truck insurance?

It depends on the crane capacity and reach, what is typically lifted and its value, whether sites are residential, commercial or industrial, whether lifts are made over roads and public areas, operator ticketing and experience, the excess and claims history. The lifting exposure usually influences the price more than the truck itself.
