A concrete pump is one of the most expensive machines on a residential build and one of the easiest to damage. Boom contact with overhead powerlines, line blockages and outrigger failure on soft ground account for a large share of claims, and a boom repair alone can run well into six figures. The machine, the pipeline and the pour are separate exposures.

What is it?

Concrete pumps in Australia range from trailer-mounted line pumps through to truck-mounted boom pumps, commonly quoted by boom reach in metres, and placing booms fixed on larger sites. Boom pumps are built by specialists such as Putzmeister, Schwing and Cifa on heavy rigid chassis, and are typically operated by dedicated pumping contractors rather than by the concrete supplier.

Worth raising on the call

• Powerline contact carries the largest tail of any pumping exposure because it covers injury as well as the machine.
• Confirm whether damage caused by a blocked line or an out-of-spec mix is treated as damage or as wear and tear.
• Hired-in pipeline, hoses and reducers may not fall inside your own machine item.
