Cover for agitator and transit mixer trucks delivering ready-mix concrete.
An agitator truck is a small factory on wheels carrying a load with a deadline. Once the barrel is turning the clock is running, and a breakdown, a long traffic delay or a rollover can mean losing the batch and chipping set concrete out of the drum. A high, moving centre of gravity also makes these trucks unusually prone to rolling on camber and site access.
A concrete agitator, or transit mixer, is a rigid truck carrying a rotating drum that keeps ready-mix concrete workable in transit. Australian fleets run six and eight-wheeler agitators typically between five and nine cubic metres, on chassis including Isuzu, Hino, Iveco, Mack and Volvo, with smaller mini-mix units used where residential access is tight. The barrel and its drive are usually valued separately from the chassis.
Damage to the chassis, drum, drive and chute assembly, with the mixing plant often scheduled separately from the vehicle.
Agitators carry a high, moving load and overturn on camber, soft edges and steep site access more readily than other rigids.
Damage to driveways, kerbs, underground services and finished work caused during delivery and pouring.
A loaded agitator turns into a steeply cambered residential driveway and the moving load carries it over onto its side. The truck, the barrel and the driveway are all damaged, and the load has to be cleaned up before anything else can happen.
A drive failure on a hot afternoon stops the barrel turning with a full load still aboard, and the concrete goes off before it can be discharged. Chipping set concrete out of a drum is a substantial repair and the truck is off the road throughout.
A chute is swung across a newly laid path during a pour and cracks it, with washout running into the garden beds beside it. Damage to a customer's finished work is a liability question rather than a claim on the truck.
The load is generally treated separately from the vehicle. Where the concrete is your own product it is usually addressed by an own goods or stock extension, and where it belongs to a batching customer it may fall to carriers cover. Either way it is worth being explicit about whose product is in the barrel.
It depends on the wording. Some motor policies apply conditions to operation off formed roads or on soft ground, which is exactly where agitator rollovers happen. Given how much delivery work involves unsealed or partly built sites, this is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Damage to a customer's property is generally a liability question rather than a motor one, and how it is handled depends on whether it arises out of the use of the vehicle or out of the delivery work itself. The two can sit under different sections, so the interaction is worth checking.
It depends rather than following a set price. The usual drivers are barrel capacity and axle configuration, the share of work on tight residential sites, driver experience with a loaded moving centre of gravity, the radius of operation and road conditions, and your claims history, particularly any rollovers.
