Personal Trainer Professional Indemnity

Professional indemnity and public liability for personal trainers and coaches.

Most personal trainer claims start with an injury, but the argument is about the program. Loading that was too heavy, technique that was not corrected, or exercise prescribed for a client with a known condition all point back to professional judgement. Professional indemnity generally responds to that, while public liability handles injury caused by the equipment and the space.

What is it?

Personal trainers work in gyms, studios, parks, homes and online, from one-to-one sessions through to bootcamps, group classes and remote coaching programs. Qualifications commonly sit at Certificate III or IV in Fitness. Industry registration through AUSactive, along with gym access agreements and council permits for outdoor training, generally requires evidence of insurance before you can trade.

What does personal trainer professional indemnity cover?

Program design

Claims that the training program or exercise prescribed caused a client injury.

Nutrition and supplement advice

Exposure from dietary guidance, which some wordings limit to your qualification.

Public liability

Injury or damage during sessions, which venues and councils commonly require.

What affects the cost?

  • Qualifications and services delivered
  • Group class and bootcamp numbers
  • Online and remote coaching
  • Use of your own equipment
  • Turnover and client volume

Worth raising on the call

  • Council permits and venue agreements usually specify a public liability limit before you can book space.
  • Nutrition advice beyond your qualification is a common exclusion point.
  • Programs sold online to clients you never assess in person are assessed differently.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Load progressed too quickly

A client with limited lifting experience is moved up in weight across consecutive sessions and sustains a lower back injury during a deadlift. The claim generally focuses on the program design, the technique coaching and the pre-exercise screening completed before training began.

Online program with no assessment

A remote client follows a program written from an online questionnaire, aggravates a pre-existing knee condition and argues the exercises were never appropriate for them. Programs sold without any in-person assessment are typically scrutinised closely by both the claimant and the insurer.

Meal plan and supplement advice

A trainer provides a restrictive meal plan and a supplement stack and the client becomes unwell. Where the advice goes beyond the trainer's qualification, whether the wording responds at all commonly becomes the issue rather than the injury itself.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether nutrition and meal planning advice is covered and to what qualification level, since wordings commonly limit it to your documented scope of practice.
  • Worth confirming whether training in client homes, parks and other non-gym locations is included, and whether holding a council permit is a condition of that cover.
  • Worth confirming whether your own equipment such as kettlebells, sleds and portable rigs is contemplated both for damage to it and for injuries it causes.

Common questions

Do I need insurance to train clients in a public park?

Councils generally require a commercial trainer permit for organised training in a public reserve, and those permits almost always specify a minimum public liability limit and current certificate of currency. Conditions differ between councils, including group size, hours and locations. Check the specific council's permit terms before you book clients in.

Does the gym's policy cover me as a contractor?

Usually not for your own liability. Gym policies are generally arranged to protect the gym, and most contractor or licence agreements require trainers to hold their own professional indemnity and public liability. The agreement normally sets the minimum limit as well, so read it before assuming a standard figure is enough.

Can I give nutrition advice to my clients?

It depends on your qualification and how the policy is worded. General healthy eating guidance within a fitness qualification is treated very differently to prescribing meal plans, supplements or advice for a medical condition, which usually sits with a dietitian. Advice outside your scope is one of the more common points where cover becomes an issue.

What does personal trainer insurance cost?

It depends on how you deliver rather than a set figure. Insurers rate on qualifications and services offered, group class and bootcamp numbers, online and remote coaching, use of your own equipment, turnover and client volume, and the limits your venues require. Adding remote programs or higher risk modalities generally changes the rating.
