Cover for water carts used for dust suppression and site works.
A water truck is two assets in one policy conversation: a registered heavy vehicle and a purpose-built water body with pump, spray bars and cannon. It also handles badly. A part-full tank surges when the truck brakes or turns, and rollovers on haul roads and unsealed tracks are the loss water cart operators see most often.
Water trucks are rigid trucks, commonly Isuzu, Hino, Volvo, Mack or Kenworth, fitted with a steel or poly tank, a pump, spray bars, side sprays and a rear cannon. Capacities run from a few thousand litres on small council units up to very large mine site carts. They are used for dust suppression, compaction, road construction, fire support and general site water carting.

Damage occurring inside mine, quarry and construction sites, where a road-only motor wording may not respond.
Overturning on haul roads or unsealed tracks, plus the cost of recovering and righting the truck.
A cart running a haul road with a half-empty tank has the load surge forward on a bend and goes over onto its side. Surge-related rollovers are the loss water cart operators see most often, and tank baffling is usually one of the first things an underwriter asks about.
The rear spray cannon catches a low branch or an overhead structure on the way into a job and is torn from its mount, taking the plumbing with it. Whether that is covered on the same basis as the cab chassis depends on how the water body has been scheduled.
A poly tank develops a split along a mounting bracket after months of corrugated station tracks and starts losing water on the run. Whether this is sudden accidental damage or gradual deterioration is commonly argued, so the wording around gradual damage matters here.
Both approaches are used and the right one depends on where it works. A cart that spends most of its life inside mine, quarry or construction sites is often better placed under a mobile plant arrangement, while road travel generally needs motor cover and compulsory third party. Trucks that do both usually need the two sides deliberately matched so there is no gap at the site gate.
It commonly is, and it often should be. A steel or poly tank with pump, spray bars, side sprays and a cannon can be worth more than the second-hand cab chassis under it, particularly on older trucks. Splitting the values makes it far clearer what would actually be paid after a total loss.
That is a liability question rather than a vehicle one, and it depends on the liability section being in place with appropriate wording. Over-watering a subgrade or damaging a neighbouring property are the sorts of claims that come up. It is worth raising the specific work you do so the liability cover is matched to it.
It depends on the unit and where it works. The main drivers are the truck and water body values, tank capacity and baffling, the split between site work and public road use, driver experience and licensing, remoteness and recovery access, and claims history. Mine site work is generally assessed differently to council and civil work.
