Volvo Equipment Insurance

Cover for Volvo articulated haulers, loaders and excavators.

Volvo Construction Equipment's signature machine in Australia is the articulated hauler, and it carries a different risk profile to static plant. Haulers run loaded at speed on rough haul roads, so rollovers, tyre failures and collisions with other site traffic dominate the claims. Wheel loaders and excavators in the same fleet sit closer to the usual site exposures.

What is it?

Volvo Construction Equipment builds articulated haulers, wheel loaders, crawler and wheeled excavators, motor graders, compactors and compact machines. In Australia the brand is common on quarry, civil and mining contracts, supported by a national dealer network. Machines are typically fitted with CareTrack telematics, which records location, hours and fault codes and is often relied on by financiers and fleet managers.

What does volvo equipment insurance cover?

Hauler operation

Damage from rollovers, collisions and haul road incidents, which dominate articulated hauler claims.

Fleet plant cover

Damage to owned machines across sites, generally scheduled by machine with agreed or market value settlement.

Downtime and hire-in

Cover toward the cost of a replacement machine while yours is repaired, subject to the policy terms.

What affects the cost?

  • Machine values and fleet mix
  • Haul road length and gradient
  • Quarry, civil or mining sites
  • Operator ticketing and experience
  • Machine age and hours

Worth raising on the call

  • Hauler tyres are expensive and are commonly excluded unless damaged in a wider insured loss.
  • Agreed value is worth discussing on high-hour machines where market value has fallen sharply.
  • Telematics helps after a theft but does not replace the security conditions in the policy.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Loaded hauler rolls on a ramp

An articulated hauler loaded with wet material rolls on a greasy quarry ramp, damaging the cab, body and articulation joint. Recovering and righting a rolled hauler needs specialist lifting gear, so it is worth knowing what the recovery sub-limit is before it happens.

Collision at a haul road intersection

A hauler and a light vehicle meet at a blind haul road intersection during shift change. These incidents typically involve vehicle damage, potential injury and a site investigation, and they usually engage the liability section as well as the plant section.

Tyre lets go at speed

A hauler tyre fails at speed on a hot day, taking out the rim, guard and hydraulic lines as it goes. The tyre itself may sit outside the cover as a wear item, while the resulting damage is often assessed differently, which is why the wording matters here.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether hauler tyres and rims are covered when a tyre failure is what causes the wider damage, rather than the result of it.
  • Worth confirming whether damage occurring on private haul roads, quarry benches and mine access tracks is picked up by the plant policy or expected to sit with a motor policy.
  • Worth confirming whether recovering and righting a rolled hauler, including specialist lifting gear and access works, is inside a sub-limit.

Common questions

Does an articulated hauler need registration and compulsory third party cover?

If it travels on public roads it will generally need registration under state or territory rules, which brings compulsory third party with it. A machine that stays entirely inside site boundaries usually does not, but the rules differ between states and some sites impose their own requirements. The plant policy needs to respond on site either way, so it is worth confirming both.

Does CareTrack telematics satisfy the policy's security conditions?

Telematics helps a great deal after a theft by showing where a machine went, and some insurers recognise it. It does not usually replace the physical security conditions in the wording, such as immobilisers, locked compounds or key control. It is worth asking the insurer directly whether it affects either the premium or the conditions.

Should high-hour Volvo machines be insured on agreed value?

It is worth comparing. On machines with very high hours, market value can settle well below what it would cost you to put an equivalent unit back into the fleet, and agreed value removes that argument by fixing the figure at inception. The trade-off is usually premium, so a broker can show how each would settle on your specific machines.

What does Volvo construction equipment insurance cost?

It depends on the fleet and the sites. The main drivers are machine values and fleet mix, haul road length and gradient, whether the work is quarry, civil or mining, operator ticketing and experience, machine age and hours, and claims history. Haulers are usually rated differently to loaders and excavators in the same fleet.
