Cover for asphalt and concrete pavers used in road construction.
Pavers work on live or partly opened roads, often at night, surrounded by traffic and other plant. That setting drives the claims: struck by passing vehicles, damaged during float-on and float-off, and burns or fire around the heated screed. The machine is slow and heavy, so a good share of its damage actually happens getting to and from the job.
An asphalt paver lays and levels hot mix through a hopper, conveyor and heated screed, running on tracks or wheels, with paving width adjusted by screed extensions. Concrete pavers and profilers sit in the same family. Brands common in Australia include Vogele, Caterpillar, Dynapac and Bomag. A paver usually works as part of a spread with rollers, a profiler and a haulage fleet.
Damage to the paver, screed and extensions, which are frequently damaged separately from the main machine.
Damage while loading, unloading and floating on a low loader, which is a common paver claim.
Third-party injury and property damage around live traffic and open road work, subject to the policy terms.
A haulage truck backing up to the hopper misjudges the distance and hits the hopper wings and screed edge. It is one of the most frequent paver claims and it sits between the plant section and liability, depending on whose truck it was and who was directing it.
A car drives through the cone taper on a night job and strikes the paver, injuring a crew member and damaging the machine. Incidents like this usually involve the liability section, the plant section and workers compensation at the same time, and traffic management records become important evidence.
A burner fault ignites accumulated oil and mix residue around the screed and the fire spreads into the conveyor tunnel. Fire on a paver is generally an insured peril, but insurers commonly ask about cleaning practice and burner servicing when assessing the claim.
Generally not. Rectifying your own defective workmanship is commonly excluded from both plant and liability policies, because it is a contractual performance issue rather than an insured accident. Damage that defective work causes to other property can be treated differently, and contract works cover may be relevant on some projects, so it is worth discussing the specific job.
It depends on your contracts. Plant cover looks after your machines, while contract works cover deals with the works under construction until practical completion, and many head contracts require the latter or require you to be noted on the principal's policy. Reading the insurance clause of the contract is usually the fastest way to work out which applies.
Night work and live-traffic exposure should be declared rather than assumed, because they change the liability discussion materially. Most policies will accommodate it, but some carry conditions about traffic management plans and accredited traffic control. Raising it up front generally avoids a dispute after an incident.
It depends on the machine and the work profile. The main drivers are machine value and age, how much night and live-traffic work you do, the number of floats between jobs, operator ticketing and crew size, the requirements your principals impose, and claims history. A broker can price it once the spread and typical job type are clear.
