JCB Insurance

Cover for JCB backhoes, telehandlers, excavators and site dumpers.

JCB machines turn up across Australian civil, hire and farming work, with the backhoe loader and the Loadall telehandler doing most of the heavy lifting. Both are multi-purpose machines that move between jobs on their own wheels, so road use, transit and constant attachment changes all feed the risk picture. Parts also come through a smaller dealer network than the Japanese majors, which matters for downtime.

What is it?

JCB is a British manufacturer best known in Australia for the 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders and the Loadall telescopic handler range. The line-up also covers tracked and wheeled excavators, site dumpers, compact track loaders, rough terrain forklifts and agricultural handlers. Machines are sold and serviced through a dealer network that is thinner in regional areas than some competing brands.

What does jcb insurance cover?

Machine and attachments

Damage to the machine plus buckets, forks, grabs and quick hitches, generally scheduled by value.

Road and site use

Backhoes and telehandlers that travel between jobs on public roads need that use raised, not assumed.

Downtime and hire-in

Cover toward the cost of a substitute machine while yours is repaired, subject to the policy terms.

What affects the cost?

  • Machine value, age and hours
  • Road travel between sites
  • Attachment set carried
  • Hire out versus own use
  • Regional parts and repair access

Worth raising on the call

  • Telehandlers used to lift people need the work platform attachment declared, because it changes the risk.
  • Machines driven on public roads may need registration and compulsory third party cover as well as plant cover.
  • Parts lead times decide how long you are off the tools, so downtime cover is worth pricing properly.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Loadall tips with a raised load

A telehandler on soft fill extends the boom to place a pallet of bricks on a first floor and the machine goes over onto its side. Claims of this type usually involve both damage to the machine and third-party property damage where the load lands, so two sections of the policy come into play at once.

Backhoe struck while parked roadside

A 3CX left on a verge overnight during a water main repair is hit by a passing vehicle, damaging the loader arms and front axle. Recovery generally depends on whether the machine is covered while stationary on a public road, not only while it is working on a site.

Stabiliser cracks a driveway

An operator drops the backhoe stabilisers onto a homeowner's concrete driveway to reach a service trench and cracks the slab. That is third-party property damage rather than damage to your own plant, so it typically sits under the public liability section and carries its own excess.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether damage occurring while the machine is being driven on a public road between jobs is picked up by the plant policy or expected to sit with a motor policy.
  • Worth confirming whether a work platform or man cage fitted to a Loadall is covered, and whether lifting people changes the liability position.
  • Worth confirming whether hired-in or borrowed attachments fitted to your JCB are covered while they are in your possession.

Common questions

Do I need registration and CTP for a JCB backhoe driven on the road?

If the machine travels on public roads it will generally need to be registered under your state or territory rules, which brings compulsory third party cover with it. Conditional or plant registration categories exist in most states with their own limits on use. A plant policy sits alongside that, not instead of it, so both usually need to be in place.

Am I covered if I dry hire my JCB to another builder?

Only if it has been declared. Dry hire means the machine goes out without your operator, and insurers commonly rate that differently because you no longer control who is driving it or where it is parked. It is worth raising before the machine leaves the yard, and worth checking what the hire agreement says about who repairs damage.

Are telehandler forks, jibs and buckets covered under the machine's value?

Usually not automatically. Attachments are commonly scheduled as separate items with their own values, and a set of forks, a jib and a bucket can add up to more than owners expect. Reviewing the attachment schedule each renewal is generally the simplest way to keep it accurate.

What does JCB insurance cost?

It depends on the specifics rather than the badge on the machine. The main drivers are machine value, age and hours, how much road travel is involved, the attachment set carried, whether the machine is hired out, where it is stored, and your claims history. Regional parts and repair access can also affect how downtime cover is priced.
