Cover for rigid off-highway dump trucks and small site dumpers.
Off-highway dump trucks never see a public road, so they sit outside motor cover and belong on a plant schedule. The claims that matter are haul road incidents, body damage from loading, and tyres, which on a large rigid truck are a serious cost in their own right. Small site dumpers at the other end have a completely different profile.
This covers rigid off-highway trucks used in quarrying and mining, from makers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi and Bell, through to small articulated site dumpers from Thwaites, Wacker Neuson and Terex used on civil jobs. Road-registered tipper trucks are a separate class and are usually rated as heavy motor rather than plant, which changes which policy responds.
Damage to the chassis, body, driveline and suspension while operating on site.
Body and canopy damage caused by the excavator or loader filling the tray.
Rollovers on haul roads, tip heads and stockpile edges, subject to the policy terms.
A rigid truck backs up to a tip head to discharge and the windrow and edge material give way under the rear axles, putting the truck over the face. Recovery from a tip face is difficult and expensive, and the tip head management practices are usually examined closely afterwards.
A loading unit drops oversize shot rock from height and cracks the body floor and damages the cab canopy. Insurers commonly want to know whether this was a single event or the accumulation of many loads, because that determines whether it is damage or wear.
A small articulated site dumper rolls on a soft temporary ramp on a civil job, throwing the operator. As well as the machine damage there is generally a WHS notification, and the ROPS and seatbelt arrangements become part of the conversation.
Generally not. Off-highway rigid trucks are not registered road vehicles and are normally scheduled as plant, so a fleet motor policy is unlikely to respond. Road registered tipper trucks are the opposite case and usually sit under heavy motor. Getting each vehicle on the right policy matters, because assuming the motor policy picks up a site truck is a common and expensive mistake.
Site dumpers are usually scheduled on the plant policy alongside other machines, though lower value units are sometimes left to sit under an unspecified small plant limit. That limit is often below the replacement cost of a modern dumper. Listing them individually is generally the safer approach, particularly where they are left on site overnight.
It depends on the trucks and the site, and any figure before underwriting would be a guess. Truck size, value and hours, whether the site is a quarry, mine or civil job, haul road design and tip head management, tyre policy and spares held, operator training and site rules, and claims history are the main drivers. Whether tyres are covered materially changes the premium.
Your own spoil or product in the tray is generally not covered by the plant section, which is concerned with damage to the machine. Where you are carrying someone else's material, or material forming part of a contract works, different cover may be needed. It is worth confirming who owns the material and what happens if a load is lost or contaminated.
