Crane Insurance

Cover for mobile, slew and tower cranes.

Crane work concentrates enormous value in a single lift. The crane matters, but the property under the hook and the consequences of dropping it usually matter more.

What is it?

Cranes include franna and pick-and-carry units, all-terrain and rough-terrain slew cranes, crawler cranes and tower cranes, from makers such as Terex, Liebherr, Grove, Tadano and Kato. Capacity ranges from a few tonnes to several hundred.

What does crane insurance cover?

The crane

Damage to the crane, boom, rigging and counterweights.

Load being lifted

Property in your care while under the hook, which standard liability generally excludes.

Liability and erection

Third-party damage during lifts, erection and dismantling.

What affects the cost?

  • Crane capacity and type
  • What is lifted and typical load values
  • Sites - urban, industrial or remote
  • Dogger and operator ticketing
  • Whether cranes are hired out with or without operator

Worth raising on the call

  • Cover for the load under the hook is the first thing to confirm.
  • Erection and dismantling is often a separately worded phase.
  • Wet hire and dry hire are underwritten differently.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Panel dropped onto a finished slab

A rigged precast panel or a steel member comes loose during placement and lands on completed work. The damage to the structure, the damage to the item itself and the delay to the whole site are usually three separate conversations.

Outrigger punches through a slab

A pad is set over a filled trench or a basement slab and the outrigger breaks through, the crane lists and the boom contacts adjacent property. Ground bearing assessment and pad selection are usually the first questions asked afterwards.

Contact with an overhead line during a street lift

During a lift over a suburban street the boom or the load contacts a distribution line, tripping supply to surrounding properties. The machine damage sits alongside a network operator claim and a regulator investigation.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether the crane is covered during erection, dismantling and while travelling between sites, since those are often separately worded phases with their own conditions.
  • Worth confirming whether cover for the load under the hook has its own limit and whether it applies for the whole period the load is in your control, not just while it is airborne.
  • Worth confirming what the wording expects around documented lift plans, ground bearing assessments and current dogger, rigger and operator ticketing.

Common questions

What is hook cover and do I need it?

Hook cover, sometimes called goods lifted or care, custody and control cover, generally responds to damage to the property you are lifting, which standard public liability commonly excludes. Most crane operators need it because the load is often worth far more than the crane. The limit should reflect the most valuable item you realistically lift.

With wet hire and dry hire, who insures the crane?

In wet hire you supply the crane and the operator and generally retain responsibility for the machine and its operation. In dry hire the machine goes out without your operator, which most wordings treat as a materially different arrangement that must be declared. The hire agreement and the policy need to say the same thing.

Does the policy cover damage the load does to the building?

Damage to the property you are lifting and damage the load causes to someone else's property are typically handled by different sections, the first by a goods lifted extension and the second by public liability. Most crane programmes need both, and the limits are usually set separately. It is worth checking both against the sites you work on.

What does crane insurance cost?

There is no useful average. Insurers generally weigh crane capacity and type, what is lifted and typical load values, whether sites are urban, industrial or remote, dogger and operator ticketing, whether cranes go out on hire and with or without an operator, the hook limit selected, the excess and claims history.
