Concrete Mixer Insurance

Cover for truck mixers, agitators and site concrete mixing plant.

The expensive concrete mixer claim is usually not a crash. It is a breakdown that leaves a full barrel going off, which can mean chipping the load out or replacing the bowl. Add a high centre of gravity with a moving load, tight residential deliveries and chutes working near overhead powerlines, and the risk sits well outside a normal truck profile.

What is it?

Truck mixers, commonly called agitators, carry a rotating bowl on a heavy rigid or multi-axle chassis, typically four to eight cubic metres. Purpose-built mixer bodies are fitted to chassis from makers such as Isuzu, Kenworth, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. Smaller mini mix trucks, site mixers and portable barrow mixers are separate classes and are usually rated on different terms.

What does concrete mixer insurance cover?

Truck and mixer body

Damage to the chassis, bowl, drive and chutes, which are typically rated together as one unit.

Rollover and overturning

Overturning caused by a moving load, road camber or soft site access, a frequent mixer loss.

Site delivery damage

Damage to driveways, kerbs, slabs and services while placing concrete, generally a liability question.

What affects the cost?

  • Fleet size and vehicle values
  • Metropolitan versus rural delivery runs
  • Driver experience and turnover
  • Residential site access conditions
  • Claims history for rollovers and site damage

Worth raising on the call

  • A breakdown with a loaded bowl can cost more than the repair, so ask how the set load is treated.
  • Washout and spillage into drains can bring an environmental cost that liability wordings handle separately.
  • Chutes and conveyors working near overhead lines are a recognised exposure worth raising at quote.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Load goes off in the barrel

A truck breaks down on the way to a pour and the load hardens in the bowl before it can be discharged. The cost of jackhammering the set concrete out, or replacing the bowl entirely, regularly exceeds the cost of the original mechanical failure.

Agitator over on a camber

A part loaded truck takes a roundabout with the load sloshing and the high centre of gravity puts it on its side across the lane. Beyond the truck and bowl, there is usually road authority cleanup, traffic disruption and spilled concrete to deal with.

Driveway cracked on a residential pour

A loaded agitator drives up a residential crossover and cracks the driveway slab and kerb, or the chute clips a low service line to the house. Damage to the customer's property is generally handled under liability, and how property in your care is worded matters.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether the cost of removing set concrete from the bowl, and the value of the load itself, is covered following a breakdown or an accident, or whether only the mechanical damage is.
  • Worth confirming whether damage to driveways, crossovers, kerbs, lawns and services while accessing a delivery site is covered under liability, or restricted as property in your care, custody or control.
  • Worth confirming whether washout or spillage entering a stormwater drain, and the resulting cleanup and regulator costs, sits within the liability section or needs a separate pollution extension.

Common questions

Is a truck mixer insured under a motor policy or a plant policy?

Road registered agitators are generally rated as heavy motor rather than mobile plant, with the mixer body normally insured together with the chassis as one unit. Site mixers and portable barrow mixers that never travel on public roads usually sit on a plant schedule instead. Getting this right matters, because the two wordings handle rollover, load and site access damage differently.

Does the policy cover the concrete in the bowl?

The load is generally treated separately from the vehicle, either as goods carried or under an extension for your own goods in transit, and it is not automatically included in the vehicle section. Cover for removing set concrete after a breakdown is a further question again. Confirm both points in the wording, since the load and the cleanup are frequently the larger part of the loss.

What does concrete mixer insurance cost?

It depends on the fleet and the delivery pattern, so no figure can be given honestly up front. Fleet size and vehicle values, metropolitan versus rural runs, driver experience and turnover, residential site access conditions and claims history for rollovers and site damage are the main drivers. Liability limits and whether load and cleanup extensions are included also affect it.

Am I covered if the wrong mix or a short load is delivered?

That is generally not a damage claim. A wrong or short load is usually a product liability or defective workmanship question, and many wordings restrict the cost of rectifying your own work or product while covering resulting damage to other property. Where a poor pour damages other parts of a build, the position can differ again. Worth confirming exactly how your wording handles product and workmanship.
