Cover for smooth drum, padfoot and multi-tyre compaction rollers.
Rollers cause two very different problems. They roll over, usually off a batter or embankment edge, and they shake nearby buildings, which turns into third-party claims for cracked walls and slabs near road and subdivision works. The machine itself is comparatively cheap to replace next to a street of vibration complaints, and small rollers are a common theft item.
Compaction rollers include single and double smooth drum units, padfoot rollers for cohesive material, multi-tyre rollers for asphalt, and small walk-behind and trench compactors. Bomag, Dynapac, Caterpillar, Hamm, Ammann, Sakai and Wacker Neuson are commonly used in Australia. Most run a vibratory drum, which is where both the productivity and the neighbouring-property exposure come from.

Rollovers on batters, embankment edges and stockpiles, which are the leading roller loss.
Claims from neighbouring owners for cracking attributed to compaction, usually a liability question.
A smooth drum roller compacting the shoulder of an embankment loses the edge and rolls down the batter, damaging the ROPS, drum and hydraulics. Recovery usually needs a crane or excavator, and the incident normally triggers a WHS notification as well as a claim.
Residents beside a subdivision road build claim vibratory compaction cracked their cornices, tiles and driveway slab. These are handled under liability rather than plant, and outcomes generally turn on whether a dilapidation survey was done before the works started.
A walk behind trench rammer and a plate compactor are lifted out of an open ute tray parked at a job. Because these small items are often not individually listed, settlement is frequently limited by the per item cap under the unspecified small plant section.
Liability generally requires that you were negligent or that the damage arose from your work in a way the law recognises, and vibration claims are commonly contested on causation. The practical defence is a pre works dilapidation survey with photographs, plus vibration monitoring where the works are close to existing structures. Whether the policy responds depends on how vibration and support are treated in the liability wording.
Self propelled rollers used within a site are generally treated as plant rather than registered vehicles. Where a roller travels along a road under works or between adjacent jobs, some states have a conditional registration category with its own conditions. It is worth checking the position with your state road authority and making sure the plant policy covers the machine in the way it actually moves.
It depends on the machine and the work, and quoting a figure without underwriting would be misleading. Machine size and value, how close the works sit to existing buildings, whether batter and embankment work is involved, operator ticketing and experience, storage of small rollers overnight and claims history are the main drivers. The liability limit needed for vibration exposure often matters more than the machine value.
Australian WHS duties generally require ride on plant with a rollover risk to have appropriate operator protection and restraint in place and maintained, and rollover on batters is a recognised roller hazard. Regulators and principals commonly check this, and insurers frequently ask about it at underwriting. Worth confirming with your state WHS regulator and keeping the maintenance records to hand.
