Cover for tracked dozers on clearing, civil, quarry and mine work.
Dozers push through material that damages them: rock, stumps, scrap and buried obstacles. Two things drive the claims, fire from vegetation and debris packed around a hot engine bay, and undercarriage damage that insurers generally treat as wear rather than an accident. On top of that, moving an oversize machine by float is a risk event in its own right.
Bulldozers are tracked machines with a front blade and often a rear ripper, running from small six-way blade units through to large mine-spec dozers. Caterpillar D series, Komatsu D series, John Deere and Liebherr are the makes seen most in Australia. Blades, rippers, winches and forestry guarding are usually scheduled separately from the base machine because they carry real value.

Engine bay and vegetation fires, a leading cause of total loss on land clearing work.
Damage during loading, transport and unloading, including when a machine is moved in parts.
Grass seed, bark and dry slash pack around a hot turbo on a land clearing job and the dozer burns out before anyone can reach it with a fire cart. These are frequently total losses, and the follow up question is whether the fire escaped into standing vegetation or onto a neighbour's country.
A dozer ripping in rocky ground loses a final drive and shreds the undercarriage over a short period. Insurers commonly treat undercarriage and final drive deterioration as wear rather than accidental damage, so these often become a maintenance cost rather than a claim.
A dozer being relocated has the blade removed and carried separately, and the blade is damaged in transit, or the machine contacts a low structure on an oversize route. Whether it responds generally depends on the transit wording, the permit conditions and whether the removed components were still described on the schedule.
Tracked dozers generally do not travel on public roads and are treated as plant rather than registered vehicles. Movements happen by float, and an oversize load permit from the state road authority is often required depending on width, height and mass. The insurance question then becomes whether the transit and loading exposure is properly covered rather than whether the machine is registered.
Onboard suppression is not universally required by law, but many mine sites, forest managers and principals require it by contract, and insurers commonly view it favourably or make it a condition on land clearing work. Daily engine bay cleandowns and carrying water on site are usually looked at alongside it. It is worth asking how suppression and cleandown routines are reflected in the terms offered.
It depends heavily on the machine and the work, and no honest figure can be given before underwriting. Machine size, value and hours, whether the work is land clearing, civil, quarry or mine, fire suppression fitted, the fire risk of the sites and season worked, float movement frequency and claims history are the main drivers. The liability limit you need for fire escape is often the bigger cost question.
That is generally a liability question rather than a machinery one, and the liability section responds subject to its limit and terms. Working through a total fire ban or against a permit condition can complicate a claim, and the cost of a fire that runs into neighbouring country can be very large. It is worth reviewing the liability limit specifically against clearing season exposure rather than assuming the standard limit is adequate.
