Articulated Hauler Insurance

Cover for articulated dump trucks on civil, quarry and mine haul roads.

Articulated haulers earn their keep on unformed ground, which is exactly where they get damaged. Rollovers on haul road batters, tyre destruction and body damage during loading account for much of the claim spend, and a single machine is commonly a high six-figure asset. They rarely travel on public roads, so float movements become a distinct and higher-risk event.

What is it?

An articulated dump truck, or ADT, is a six-wheel-drive off-road hauler with a hinge between the cab and the body, letting it work soft and uneven ground a rigid truck cannot. Volvo, Caterpillar, Bell, Komatsu and Doosan are the makes most often seen in Australia, typically in the 25 to 45 tonne payload range. They are plant risks, not registered motor vehicles.

What does articulated hauler insurance cover?

The hauler and body

Accidental damage to the hauler, body and driveline while working on site, subject to the policy terms.

Overturning and rollover

Rollovers on haul roads, tip heads and stockpiles, which are the highest-severity hauler loss.

Float and transport

Damage during loading, transport and unloading between sites on a low loader.

What affects the cost?

  • Machine value, age and hours
  • Site type, such as quarry, civil or mine
  • Haul road design and gradients
  • Operator training and site rules
  • Number of float movements each year

Worth raising on the call

  • Tyres are often excluded or sub-limited, and on this class of machine that is a material cost.
  • Damage from the excavator or loader filling the body is common and worth raising at quote.
  • Mine site access usually brings the principal's own insurance requirements into the policy.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Rollover on a greasy haul road

A loaded 40 tonne hauler slides on a haul road that has been rained on overnight and goes over the edge of a batter, crushing the cab guarding and twisting the body. Recovery alone can require a large crane and a road build, and that recovery cost is often a substantial part of the total claim.

Body damage under the excavator

A digger operator drops a bucket of shot rock from height and cracks the body floor and canopy over several loads. Insurers commonly ask whether this was a single identifiable event or accumulated impact, because that distinction decides whether it is accidental damage or wear.

Damage during a float relocation

A hauler shifts on the low loader during a long relocation and contacts the trailer neck, or is damaged coming off the ramps onto soft ground at the new site. Whether your plant policy or the transport operator's carriers liability responds is generally settled by the transit wording and who arranged the cartage.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether tyres and rims are covered in their own right, or only when damaged in the same event as other insured damage, because on this class of machine that distinction is expensive.
  • Worth confirming whether recovery, salvage and the cost of specialist recovery gear from a haul road, batter or tip head carries its own sub-limit separate from the machine's sum insured.
  • Worth confirming how damage caused by the loading unit striking the body is classified, since some wordings treat repeated impact from loading as gradual damage rather than an insured event.

Common questions

Does an articulated dump truck need registration and CTP?

Articulated haulers are generally treated as plant rather than registered road vehicles, because they work on site and are moved between sites on a float. If a machine has to cross or travel a short section of public road, some states allow conditional or plant registration with its own requirements. Check the position with your state road authority before any road movement, and make sure the plant policy is the one carrying the risk on site.

Is my hauler covered while it is on a low loader?

Cover during transport usually sits in a transit section, and it is worth checking whether it extends to loading and unloading as well as the journey itself. Where a third party transport operator is used, their carriers liability may respond first, but those limits are often well below the value of a hauler. Both the policy terms and the carrier's conditions of carriage are worth reading together.

What drives the cost of articulated hauler insurance?

It depends on the machine and the site, and no figure can be given honestly without underwriting. The main drivers are machine value, age and hours, whether the work is civil, quarry or mine, haul road design and gradients, operator training and site rules, how many float movements happen each year, and your claims history. Excess levels and whether tyres are covered also move the premium meaningfully.

Will a mine site require more than my standard policy?

Mine sites and large head contractors commonly set their own insurance requirements in the contract, which can include specified minimum liability limits, the principal noted as an interested party, cross liability and a waiver of subrogation. Those requirements often exceed what a standard plant policy carries by default. It is worth having the contract's insurance clause reviewed before mobilising, because retrofitting cover after an incident is not possible.
