Farm cover for Victorian dairy, grazing, cropping and horticulture.
Victoria packs a lot of different farming into a small state, and its two dominant perils are fire and flood. Black Saturday and the 2019-20 East Gippsland fires reset how insurers look at bush interface country, and the October 2022 floods through Rochester, Echuca and the Goulburn did the same for river flats and irrigation districts.
Victorian agriculture covers dairy in Gippsland and the north, wool and beef across the Western District, cropping through the Mallee and Wimmera, orchards and dairy in the Goulburn Valley, table grapes, citrus and almonds in Sunraysia, and cool climate wine in the Yarra Valley and on the Mornington Peninsula. Intensive horticulture sits close to Melbourne at Werribee South.

Flood terms for properties on the Murray, Goulburn, Campaspe and Loddon flats.
Dairy plant, standing crop, stock and machinery across the enterprise mix.
Floodwater comes through a dairy on river flats and writes off vat refrigeration, motors, switchboards and stored fodder. Whether the loss is recoverable turns on whether flood was included for that address, which many older policies simply did not carry.
A fire runs through grazing country and destroys internal fencing, stored hay and part of a cattle herd. Fencing rebuilt by a contractor at current rates routinely costs several times what the schedule was carrying.
Hail comes through a pear block and marks the fruit so it can only be sold as juice grade. The loss is the price gap rather than the tonnes picked, which is why the valuation basis on the crop section matters.
Flood terms in northern Victoria changed materially after the October 2022 events, and cover is assessed address by address rather than region by region. A policy written before then may not reflect what is offered now, in either direction, so it is worth requesting current flood terms rather than rolling the schedule over.
Fencing is commonly included in the property section but insured on a stated basis rather than as unlimited replacement. Losses after a large Western District or Gippsland fire routinely exceed the figure carried, so reviewing the per-metre rate against current contractor pricing each renewal is worthwhile.
Dairy plant is usually insured within the farm property or machinery section, but the breakdown, spoilage and business interruption pieces sit in different sections again and are easy to leave out. Because a vat or plate cooler failure affects income as well as equipment, those sections are worth reviewing together.
It depends on the property and cannot be quoted in advance. The usual drivers are the bushfire attack level and access, flood mapping on the property, the enterprise type and plant values, fencing and fodder exposure, and irrigation infrastructure.
