Cover for cane growing, harvesting fleets and crush season exposure.
Cane is grown in Australia's cyclone and flood belt, and the crop stands in the paddock for a full year before harvest. A cyclone crossing the Herbert or the Burdekin can flatten standing cane and the ratoon consequences run into following seasons. The harvesting fleet is expensive and only earns during a short crush window each year.
Cane farms run from Mossman and Tully through the Herbert, Burdekin, Mackay and Bundaberg districts, and along the NSW Northern Rivers at Condong, Broadwater and Harwood. Growers manage plant and ratoon crops, cane railway sidings and haul roads, and operate chopper harvesters, haul-outs, tractors and irrigation, delivering to a mill on a fixed crush schedule.

Cane fire cover, including fires started during harvesting operations, subject to the policy terms.
Chopper harvesters, haul-outs and tractors, where a breakdown during the crush carries its own cost.
A cyclone crosses the district and flattens cane weeks before it is due to be cut. Harvesting becomes slower and dirtier, and the effect on the following ratoon usually sits outside anything a general policy contemplates.
A chopper harvester catches fire in the field at the peak of the crush and is out of action for weeks. The machine claim is only half the problem, because a replacement harvester in the district is very hard to source mid-season.
Floodwater runs across a low-lying block and silts drains, headlands and irrigation gear along with the standing crop. Whether the loss is recoverable depends entirely on whether flood was included for that address when the policy was placed.
Crop cover for wind and cyclone is not automatic and is underwritten by district. Cane that is flattened rather than destroyed also raises a valuation question, because it may still be harvestable at higher cost and lower yield. What responds and how it is assessed comes back to the policy terms and the PDS.
Cane fire cover commonly contemplates fires started during harvesting operations, but conditions attached to it matter, and a fire that leaves your boundary raises a separate liability question. Both the crop section and the liability section are worth checking together rather than relying on one.
The crush window is short and fixed, so time lost during it is generally harder to recover than time lost outside it. Business interruption or increased cost of working can respond to the cost of keeping cane moving to the mill while your own plant is down, which is often the larger part of the loss.
It depends on the block and cannot be quoted in advance. The main drivers are the district and cyclone zone, hectares under cane and ratoon age, harvester and haul-out values, the flood history on that specific block, and the irrigation infrastructure in place.
