Quad Bike And ATV Insurance

Cover for farm quads and side-by-side utility vehicles.

Quad bikes are the most used and most dangerous machine on many Australian farms. Rollovers are a leading cause of on-farm deaths, they are a standard target for shed theft, and because they are rarely registered, a farm policy is usually the only thing standing behind them. Values have also climbed as side-by-sides replace traditional quads.

What is it?

The category covers traditional four-wheel quads and the side-by-side utility vehicles that have largely replaced them, from brands including Polaris, Can-Am, Kubota and John Deere. Since the ACCC quad bike safety standard took full effect in October 2021, new general use quads sold in Australia must be fitted with an operator protection device, and some manufacturers withdrew from the market instead.

What does quad bike and atv insurance cover?

Accidental damage and rollover

Damage to the machine from rollover, collision, impact or fire while working on the property.

Theft from the property

Machines taken from sheds, yards or paddocks, where security conditions generally apply.

Liability in use

Liability arising from operating the machine, subject to the policy terms and exclusions.

What affects the cost?

  • Machine type and replacement value
  • Quad versus side-by-side configuration
  • Who rides it and rider age
  • Shed security and immobilisers
  • Any use off the property or on public roads

Worth raising on the call

  • Injury to the rider is generally not covered by property or liability sections and needs separate personal accident cover.
  • Riding on a public road usually requires registration and a motor policy rather than a farm policy.
  • Insurers increasingly ask about helmets, rider training and operator protection devices.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Rollover on a dam bank

A side-by-side rolls while checking troughs on a steep dam bank and lands on its cage, bending the chassis and destroying the roll structure. The machine claim generally proceeds on its own terms, while injury to the rider sits outside the property and liability sections.

Quads taken from the shed overnight

Two quads are lifted from an open machinery shed during harvest while nobody is home, along with a trailer. Recovery usually turns on whether the shed met the security conditions stated on the schedule, such as locks, immobilisers or keys being removed.

Passenger thrown from a farm quad

A worker riding a quad clips a fence post and a passenger on the back is thrown clear and injured. Liability for the passenger is a separate question again to whether the machine itself is repaired or replaced.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether cover changes when the machine is ridden by someone under a stated age, by an untrained operator, or by a visitor rather than a household member or employee.
  • Worth confirming whether accessories such as spray tanks, dog crates, cargo trays and aftermarket bars are inside the machine's sum insured or need to be listed separately.
  • Worth confirming whether theft from an open paddock or an unlocked shed is treated differently to theft from a locked building, since the security conditions often distinguish between them.

Common questions

Do I need to register a quad bike to insure it?

Unregistered machines used entirely on private property are commonly insured under a farm or specified plant section. Riding on a public road is a different use that generally requires registration and a motor policy, so it is worth confirming how the machine is actually used before assuming the farm policy follows it off the property.

Is my quad already covered on my farm policy?

Sometimes, but usually only if it has been listed and valued rather than assumed to fall under general farm plant. Side-by-side values have risen sharply, so a machine added years ago at a lower figure is a common source of shortfall. Check the schedule rather than the policy summary.

Does quad bike insurance cover injury to the rider?

Generally not. Property sections respond to the machine and liability sections respond to injury caused to other people, so injury to the rider is normally addressed through personal accident cover, income protection or workers compensation depending on who was riding. Given rollovers are a leading cause of on-farm deaths, this gap is worth closing deliberately.

What does quad bike and ATV insurance cost?

It depends and cannot be quoted without the machine details. The usual drivers are the make, model and replacement value, whether it is a quad or a side-by-side, who rides it and their age, shed security and immobilisers, and whether it is ever used off the property.
