Mixed Farming Insurance

Cover for combined cropping and livestock enterprises on one property.

Mixed farms carry every exposure at once. One property might hold a header, a seeding rig, a shearing shed, three thousand ewes, silos of grain and hundreds of hectares of standing crop, all exposed to the same fire on the same afternoon. The real risk is not any single item, it is sums insured drifting out of date across a long asset list.

What is it?

Mixed farming combines cropping with livestock on the same property, the classic wheat-sheep pattern of the Wimmera, Riverina, the Mid North of South Australia and the WA wheatbelt. Rotations move between cereals, canola, lentils and pasture, with sheep or cattle grazing stubble and fodder, so machinery, stock, stored grain and standing crop all sit under one insurance program.

What does mixed farming insurance cover?

Farm property and buildings

Homestead, sheds, silos, yards, fencing and water infrastructure against defined events.

Machinery and stored grain

Headers, tractors, seeding equipment and grain held on farm after harvest.

Livestock and standing crop

Stock against defined events and crop against fire and hail, arranged section by section.

What affects the cost?

  • Hectares cropped and stock numbers
  • Machinery replacement values
  • On-farm grain storage capacity
  • Fire and hail exposure
  • Spread of buildings across the property

Worth raising on the call

  • Machinery values move quickly and an outdated sum insured is the most common gap at claim time.
  • Section limits matter more than the total, because one fire can hit several sections at once.
  • Contract harvesting or spraying done for neighbours generally needs to be declared.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Header fire runs into the crop

A bearing fails in the sieves during harvest and the header burns, with the fire running into standing crop before a water cart arrives. The machine, the crop and any spread onto a neighbour's paddock generally sit under three different sections of the same policy.

Hay shed lost to lightning

Lightning starts a fire in a hay shed and takes a season of fodder along with the building. Fodder is often carried at a value set before feed prices moved, so the shortfall only becomes obvious when replacement hay is being bought in.

Storm damage lets water into a silo

A storm lifts sheeting off a silo and rain gets into stored wheat before it can be shifted. Downgraded or spoiled grain is assessed under the stored grain section rather than as part of the building repair.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether grain and fodder stored on farm are covered for water and spoilage damage or only for fire and theft, since the two are commonly written differently.
  • Worth confirming whether firefighting costs, brigade attendance and the cost of removing debris after a paddock fire have their own sub-limit within the property section.
  • Worth confirming whether livestock and machinery are covered while moving between blocks you own but that are not on the same title, since transit between properties is often a separate declaration.

Common questions

Does a farm policy cover crop failure from drought?

Generally not. Standard farm wordings insure standing crop against defined events such as fire and, where taken, hail, rather than against a poor season. Broader multi-peril crop products exist in the Australian market but they are underwritten separately, priced differently and subject to their own eligibility and terms.

Is standing crop covered if my own machinery starts the fire?

Fire cover commonly responds to fires started by harvesting equipment, but the conditions attached matter, including any requirement to carry firefighting units or observe harvest bans. It is worth confirming both the crop section and the liability section, because a fire that leaves your boundary raises a different question again.

Do I need to insure machinery separately from the farm policy?

Most farm programs include a machinery or plant section, so a separate policy is not usually necessary, but the values on that section are what decide the outcome. Machinery values have moved sharply in recent years, so a schedule that has not been reviewed is the most common source of a shortfall at claim time.

What does mixed farming insurance cost?

It depends on the property and cannot be quoted without the detail. The main drivers are hectares cropped and stock numbers, machinery replacement values, on-farm grain and fodder storage, fire and hail exposure in the district, and how far buildings are spread across the property.
