Cover for commercial herds, flocks and stud animals.
Livestock cover in Australia generally responds to defined events rather than to any loss, so what is and is not a covered event is the whole conversation.
Livestock cover spans commercial cattle, sheep and pigs against events such as fire, lightning and accidental death, plus higher-value stud and bloodstock animals which are usually insured individually with wider terms.
Fire, lightning, electrocution and accidental death as set out in the wording.
Animals being carried to saleyards, processors or between properties.
Individually scheduled high-value animals, often with broader mortality terms.
A stock crate rolls on a wet bend and animals are killed or have to be destroyed at the scene. Whether this responds generally depends on whether a transit section was arranged and on whether the carrier's own liability cover answers first, which is why the carriage terms matter as much as the policy.
Lightning strikes a fence line or a tree during a storm and kills a number of animals camped nearby. Lightning is commonly listed as a defined event, so the claim usually focuses on establishing the cause, the count and the values rather than on whether the peril is covered.
A scheduled stud bull breaks a leg fighting in the paddock and is destroyed on veterinary advice. Individually scheduled animals commonly carry wider mortality terms than the commercial herd, and claims usually require the veterinary certificate and the valuation that was on file before the loss.
Commercial livestock cover in Australia is generally built around defined events such as fire, lightning, electrocution and accidental death, so disease and general mortality are commonly outside it. Broader mortality terms are sometimes available for individually scheduled stud and bloodstock animals, subject to underwriting, veterinary history and the policy terms.
Transit is generally a separate section from on-farm cover, and it is not safe to assume the carrier's liability policy makes you whole. Carriers commonly limit their liability under their carriage conditions, so it is worth confirming who carries the risk on each leg and arranging transit cover where the gap is material.
Commercial stock is usually settled on a market value basis at the time of loss, while stud and bloodstock animals are commonly individually scheduled with an agreed value supported by a purchase price or a valuation. Keeping schedules and NLIS records current is the practical difference between a straightforward claim and a contested one.
Pricing generally reflects the species and numbers, whether the animals are commercial or stud, the sums insured, how often stock are moved, the standard of paddock and yard infrastructure, veterinary and husbandry records and claims history. Individually scheduled high-value animals are rated quite differently from a commercial mob.
