Irrigation Equipment Insurance

Cover for pivots, pumps, control gear and irrigation infrastructure.

Irrigation is where a farm's water, power and electronics meet, and it fails in expensive ways. A lightning strike can take out a pump motor, variable speed drive and control panel in one hit, and a summer storm can fold a centre pivot across a paddock. A single pivot and its gearboxes can run well into six figures to reinstate.

What is it?

Irrigation equipment covers centre pivots and lateral moves, travelling irrigators, drip and micro-spray systems, mainline and risers, filtration, fertigation gear, diesel and electric pump stations, bore pumps, and the switchboards and telemetry that run them. Systems range from a single travelling gun on a small block through to linked pivots across a Riverina, Riverland or Burdekin property.

What does irrigation equipment insurance cover?

Storm and wind damage

Pivots, laterals and pipework damaged by wind, storm or falling debris, subject to the policy terms.

Electrical and machinery breakdown

Pump motors, drives, switchboards and control gear following lightning strike or breakdown. This is generally a separate section to accidental damage.

Theft from pump sites

Copper cable, solar panels, pumps and telemetry units taken from remote and unattended pump sites.

What affects the cost?

  • Number and type of pivots
  • Pump and control gear values
  • Lightning and storm exposure
  • Site security and remoteness
  • Age and condition of the system

Worth raising on the call

  • Lightning damage to drives and control boards is a common claim and worth checking it is not sub-limited.
  • Underground mainline and buried cable is generally treated differently to above-ground plant.
  • Crop loss while a pivot is down is not usually automatic and needs to be raised separately.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Pivot folded by a summer storm

A downburst catches a centre pivot mid-run and folds two spans across the paddock, bending towers and pipework. Storm damage to pivots is a frequent claim, and the reinstatement cost for spans, gearboxes and freight usually exceeds what owners expect.

Lightning takes out a pump station

A strike near a pump shed destroys the motor, the variable speed drive, the switchboard and the telemetry unit in a single event. Damage to electronics is commonly handled under a breakdown or electrical section rather than as accidental damage.

Copper cable stripped from a bore

Cable, solar panels and a controller are stripped overnight from an unattended pump site kilometres from the house. Theft from remote sites usually carries its own stated limit and its own security conditions.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether damage to control boards, drives and telemetry from lightning or power surge sits inside the main cover or under a separately sub-limited electrical section.
  • Worth confirming how buried mainline, risers and underground cable are treated, since below-ground assets are commonly worded differently to above-ground plant.
  • Worth confirming what security requirements apply to theft from remote and unattended pump sites, including any need for locks, cages or cameras.

Common questions

Are centre pivots covered for storm damage?

Storm and wind damage to pivots and laterals is commonly insurable, though limits, excesses and conditions vary and some insurers apply a separate windstorm excess in exposed districts. Reinstatement includes freight and specialist labour, which can be significant in remote areas. It is worth confirming the sum insured reflects current reinstatement cost rather than purchase price.

Does the policy cover crop loss while a pivot is out of action?

Not usually as an automatic entitlement. Loss of crop or yield following irrigation plant damage is generally a separate question, sometimes handled through business interruption or a specific extension where one is available. It is worth raising before the season rather than after a breakdown.

Is theft from a remote pump site covered?

Often, but usually under a stated limit and with security conditions attached, because copper cable and solar panels at unattended sites are a known target. Some insurers require the site to be locked, caged or fenced. It is worth checking that limit against the value of what is actually installed there.

What does irrigation equipment insurance cost?

It depends on the number and type of pivots, pump and control gear values, lightning and storm exposure in the district, site security and remoteness, the age and condition of the system, and the excess chosen. Electrical breakdown cover on older control gear is usually the sharpest part of the rating.
