Grain And Cropping Insurance

Cover for cereal, oilseed and pulse cropping programs.

A grain program spends ten months building value and about three weeks exposing it. Standing crop and windrows burn fast, headers start fires in dry stubble, and once the grain is off it can sit in silos and bunkers on farm for months waiting on a price. Each of those stages is treated differently under the policy.

What is it?

Cropping programs run wheat, barley, canola, oats, lentils, chickpeas, faba beans and lupins across the wheatbelt, Mallee, Wimmera, Riverina and the northern grains region. Crop insurance in Australia is generally arranged around fire and hail rather than yield, and it sits alongside cover for headers, chaser bins, augers, field bins, silos and grain in transit to a receival site.

What does grain and cropping insurance cover?

Fire on standing crop

Crop, windrows and stubble against fire, including fires started by harvest machinery.

Hail on standing crop

Hail on standing crop, rated by crop type, region and area planted.

Stored and in-transit grain

Grain held in silos, bags and bunkers on farm, and while being carted to a receival site or buyer.

What affects the cost?

  • Hectares and crop varieties grown
  • Regional hail and fire history
  • On-farm storage type and capacity
  • Harvest machinery and firefighting kit
  • Delivery timing versus on-farm storage

Worth raising on the call

  • Crop cover generally responds to defined events, so drought, frost and falling grain prices are not usually claimable.
  • Grain stored on farm after harvest is a different exposure from the paddock and often needs separate declaration.
  • Firefighting units, harvest bans and daily blow-down routines all influence how the fire risk is assessed.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Header fire spreads into wheat

A fire starting on a header spreads into the standing wheat and burns a large block before the fire unit and neighbours contain it. The machinery loss and the crop loss are typically two separate claims under two separate sections.

Hail through barley before stripping

A storm flattens and shatters heads across a barley paddock days before it was due to be stripped. What is payable generally depends on whether hail was taken for that crop, the area declared and the regional rating applied.

Grain lost in on-farm storage

Water gets under a bunker tarp, or a silo fire destroys wheat held back on farm waiting on a better price. Grain in on-farm storage is typically a separate item from the standing crop and often needs its own declaration.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether grain held on farm after harvest is declared, at what tonnage and value, since standing crop cover generally stops once the crop is off.
  • Worth confirming how grain in transit to a receival site or a buyer is treated, including whether it is your cover or the carrier's liability that would respond.
  • Worth confirming what harvest ban, hot works and firefighting equipment requirements the wording imposes during the fire danger period.

Common questions

Does crop insurance cover frost or drought?

Generally not. Australian crop cover is usually built around fire and hail as defined events, so frost, drought, waterlogging and price movements sit outside standard policies. Multi-peril and yield-based products exist in some markets, but they are separate, limited in scope and priced differently.

When does crop cover start and stop?

Usually from a stated point in the growing season through to harvest, with the crop moving to a different item once it is off. Windrowed or swathed crop, and crop already in the header or chaser bin, can be treated differently again. It is worth confirming the exact transition points with your broker before harvest starts.

Is grain in transit to the silo my risk?

Often at least partly. Carriers generally hold limited carriers liability rather than full cover for the goods, so a rollover or a fire in transit can leave a gap. Confirm what the carrier actually holds and whether your own policy picks up grain moving to a receival site.

What does grain and cropping insurance cost?

It depends on hectares and varieties grown, regional hail and fire history, on-farm storage type and capacity, harvest machinery and firefighting kit, delivery timing versus on-farm storage, and the excess chosen. Hail rating in particular varies sharply between regions and between crop types.
