Farm Ute Insurance

Cover for work utes used on farm and on the road.

The farm ute is the most used and most damaged asset on most properties. Single-vehicle rollovers on gravel, roo strikes at dusk, staking a tyre in a paddock and sliding off a wet track are all routine. The gap that catches owners is the fit-out: trays, canopies, dog boxes, bullbars, toolboxes and radios that never made it onto the sum insured.

What is it?

Farm utes are usually a Toyota HiLux or 79 Series LandCruiser, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max or similar, fitted with an alloy or steel tray, canopy, bullbar, spotlights, water tanks, dog boxes and drawers. Many spend far more time on gravel and paddock tracks than on bitumen, and the fit-out can add tens of thousands of dollars over the base vehicle price.

What does farm ute insurance cover?

Vehicle and accessories

The ute plus declared trays, canopies, bullbars and fitted accessories against damage, fire and theft.

Off-road and paddock use

Damage occurring on the property, which needs to fall within the use terms set out in the policy.

Tools and equipment carried

Tools and gear in the tray or canopy, generally covered under a separate general property section.

What affects the cost?

  • Vehicle value including fit-out
  • Business versus private use
  • Driver ages and employee drivers
  • Proportion of gravel and off-road work
  • Where the vehicle is kept overnight

Worth raising on the call

  • Accessories are generally only paid if declared, so the sum insured should reflect the built-up ute, not the drive-away price.
  • Tools in the back are usually not part of the motor policy and need their own section.
  • Animal strike and single-vehicle gravel road accidents make up a large share of rural motor claims.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Rollover on a gravel bend

A ute slides on loose gravel on a station road, rolls, and is written off with the tray, canopy and drawers destroyed. Whether the fit-out is paid generally depends on whether those accessories were declared and reflected in the sum insured.

Ute caught in a creek crossing

A ute is caught in a rising creek crossing and water damages the engine, electrics and interior. Water ingress and hydraulic lock claims are commonly assessed on how the vehicle came to be in the water in the first place.

Tools stolen from a locked canopy

A canopy is broken into overnight at a yard and several thousand dollars of tools and a chainsaw are taken. Tools generally sit under a general property or tools of trade section rather than the motor policy, so the claim goes elsewhere.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether the declared value includes the tray, canopy, bullbar, drawers, water tank and radios, since accessories are commonly only paid where they have been declared.
  • Worth confirming how paddock, track and off-road use is treated, and whether any use terms limit cover away from formed roads.
  • Worth confirming who counts as an insured driver, particularly employees, seasonal workers, family members under twenty-five and unlicensed drivers on the property.

Common questions

Should a farm ute be on a business or a personal policy?

If it is used for farm work it generally belongs on the farm motor schedule rather than a personal car policy, because the use, the drivers and the off-road exposure all need to be declared. Insuring a work ute as a private vehicle is a common cause of claim disputes. Mixed private and business use is normal and can simply be declared.

Are my accessories covered if I did not tell the insurer?

Accessories are generally only paid to the extent they are declared or reflected in the sum insured. A built-up ute can carry tens of thousands of dollars of tray, canopy, bar work and drawers over the base vehicle price, so declaring the fit-out is what makes the figure realistic. It is worth reviewing after every new tray, canopy or bar.

What does farm ute insurance cost?

It depends on the vehicle value including fit-out, business versus private use, driver ages and whether employees drive, the proportion of gravel and off-road work, where the vehicle is kept overnight, the excess chosen and claims history. Young or unlisted drivers are usually the sharpest single factor.

Am I covered if a worker damages the ute on the property?

Usually, provided the driver falls within the policy's driver terms and the use is within what was declared. Unlicensed drivers, drivers below an age restriction and use outside the declared purpose are the common problem areas. Injury to that worker is a workers compensation question rather than a motor one.
