Cattle And Beef Farm Insurance

Cover for beef cattle operations and grazing country.

Beef enterprises carry value in country, infrastructure and stock, spread across large areas where fire and flood can hit everything at once.

What is it?

Beef operations run breeding, backgrounding or finishing enterprises across owned and agisted country, with yards, laneways, water infrastructure, fencing and feeding systems supporting the herd.

What does cattle and beef farm insurance cover?

Property and infrastructure

Homestead, sheds, yards, fencing and water infrastructure.

Livestock

Cattle against defined events such as fire, lightning and accidental death.

Machinery and liability

Farm machinery plus liability arising from the operation, including agistment.

What affects the cost?

  • Country size and carrying capacity
  • Herd numbers and value
  • Fire and flood exposure
  • Infrastructure values
  • Agistment arrangements

Worth raising on the call

  • Livestock cover responds to defined events rather than general loss.
  • Fencing is often materially under-insured against replacement cost.
  • Agisted stock raises questions about who insures what.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Fire takes fencing and yards

A fire runs through boundary country and destroys several kilometres of fencing, a set of steel yards and a pump shed. Claims like this commonly expose the gap between the sum insured recorded on fencing years ago and what it now costs to have a contractor replace it.

Flood cuts laneways and stock water

Flash flooding washes out laneways, silts up troughs and takes out a section of the reticulation system, leaving paddocks without stock water for weeks. Whether this responds generally depends on whether flood was taken as an option and how the policy defines flood as distinct from storm and rainwater runoff.

Cattle lost in a paddock fire

A grass fire moves through a holding paddock faster than the mob can be shifted and stock are killed or have to be destroyed on veterinary advice. Livestock sections generally list fire as a defined event, so the claim usually centres on numbers, identification records and agreed values rather than on whether fire is covered.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming whether flood is included or is an option, and how the wording separates flood from storm, storm surge and rainwater runoff, because the definitions do a lot of work in a rural claim.
  • Worth confirming how agisted stock is handled, since animals you own on someone else's country, or animals owned by others on yours, are commonly treated as property in your care and may need to be declared.
  • Worth confirming whether fencing is covered for the full range of defined events or only for fire, and whether it is settled on a replacement or an indemnity basis after depreciation.

Common questions

Is cattle theft covered?

Theft or unexplained disappearance of livestock is commonly limited or outside standard defined-events cover, partly because proving a loss across large country is difficult. Some insurers will look at specific theft extensions where there are strong NLIS records and regular musters, so it is worth raising early and confirming what evidence would be required.

Am I covered for cattle on agisted country?

It depends on whose policy is meant to answer and whether the agistment location has been declared. Agistment agreements often say very little about insurance, so the practical step is to confirm in writing who insures the stock and then make sure the policy schedule matches that.

Do I need public liability if I only run cattle?

Liability is generally the section most likely to produce a claim larger than the property values on a grazing operation, particularly where there is road frontage, stock crossings, contractors or agistment. Cover is not compulsory in the way motor CTP is, but most graziers arrange it and some agreements and saleyards require evidence of it.

What drives the cost of cattle farm insurance?

The main drivers are the size of the country and its carrying capacity, herd numbers and values, the sums insured on homestead, sheds, yards, fencing and water infrastructure, bushfire and flood exposure, agistment arrangements and claims history. Excess levels and whether flood is taken also move the price materially.
