Broadacre Farm Insurance

Cover for large-scale cropping and grazing operations.

Broadacre farming concentrates enormous value into a few weeks and a few machines. A single header can be worth more than the homestead, grain sits in on-farm silos and bunkers long after harvest, and the nearest brigade may be forty minutes away. When something goes wrong out here it usually goes wrong at scale, so sums insured need checking every season.

What is it?

Broadacre operations run cereals, canola, pulses and often sheep or cattle across thousands of hectares in the Western Australian wheatbelt, the South Australian and Victorian Mallee, the Wimmera, the Riverina, the New South Wales central west and the Darling Downs. The plant list is long: tractors, air seeders, boom sprays, headers, chaser bins, augers, silos and field bins, much of it financed or leased.

What does broadacre farm insurance cover?

Farm machinery fleet

Tractors, seeders, sprayers and harvest gear against accidental damage, fire and theft.

Crop and stored grain

Standing crop against fire and hail, plus grain held in silos, bunkers and transit.

Buildings and liability

Machinery sheds, workshops, silos and the homestead, with liability across the whole operation.

What affects the cost?

  • Hectares farmed and crop mix
  • Machinery fleet value and age
  • Distance from fire response
  • On-farm storage capacity
  • Contracted and leased plant

Worth raising on the call

  • Machinery values move quickly, and a fleet last valued three seasons ago is commonly well under-insured.
  • Leased and financed plant carries the financier's own insurance requirements, which need to be matched.
  • Grain kept on farm after harvest is a separate exposure from the standing crop and is often overlooked.

Claims we are commonly asked about

Header fire runs into standing crop

A bearing lets go on a header in dry wheat stubble in December, the machine burns and the fire runs into forty hectares of unharvested crop. The machinery loss and the crop fire are typically assessed under separate sections with separate excesses and separate sums insured.

Hail strips a canola paddock

A late spring storm flattens and shatters a canola crop two weeks before swathing. What is payable generally depends on whether hail was taken for that crop, the area declared at the time and the regional rating applied.

Fire in an on-farm grain silo

A silo fire destroys wheat that was held back on farm waiting on a better price after harvest. Grain kept on farm sits under a different item and limit from the standing crop, so the declared tonnage becomes the deciding factor.

Worth confirming in the wording

  • Worth confirming how machinery is valued, since agreed value, market value and indemnity can settle very differently on a five-year-old header or self-propelled sprayer.
  • Worth confirming whether grain held on farm after harvest is scheduled and to what limit, as it is a separate item from the standing crop.
  • Worth confirming what harvest, hot works and fire-danger-period requirements the wording imposes, since these can operate as conditions that affect a fire claim.

Common questions

Does broadacre farm insurance cover drought or a poor season?

Generally not. Australian crop cover is usually built around defined events such as fire and hail rather than around yield or income, so drought, frost and falling prices sit outside most policies. Multi-peril crop products exist in some markets but are arranged separately, are limited in scope and are priced accordingly.

Do I need to insure leased or financed machinery?

Finance and lease agreements commonly require the machine to be insured on a stated basis with the financier noted on the policy. That is a contract requirement rather than an insurance law requirement, but a breach can create problems with the finance itself. It is worth matching the policy wording to what the agreement actually demands.

What does broadacre farm insurance cost?

It depends on hectares farmed and crop mix, machinery fleet value and age, distance from fire response, on-farm storage capacity, the sums insured and excesses chosen, and the claims history. Because sums insured are the main lever, an accurate machinery and building schedule usually affects the premium more than shopping the rate.

How often should I update my machinery values?

At least at every renewal, and immediately after buying, trading or upgrading a machine. Second-hand values for headers, tractors and sprayers have moved sharply in recent seasons, so a fleet valued three years ago is commonly well below what replacement costs today. Under-insurance can reduce what is paid at claim time.
